We were excited to have 17 year old Gavin Marengi back in studio with us for Episode 97. His return to our home studio at WinCam Studios (Winchester Local Access Television Studios) marked the release of his new album "Northwinds". This eight track album is full of country originals that really showcases Gavin's young, but incredibly mature voice and his ability to write really deep and story rich lyrics.
First, let's talk about a young man who was born and raised in the northeast community of Salisbury, MA. Gavin's voice belies his New England roots with a southern drawl and with just enough rasp to offer a little texture. Listening to his performance on "Back To Boston" he seamlessly blends a little southern rock in with his own style of country. He also commands the lyrics and delivery with the confidence of a seasoned porch picker.
Now for the songwriting and and composing of the music. While Gavin has an amazing band backing him and you will be impressed by the depth of instruments, the young frontman steals the show with his energy and persona. But when you delve into the stories being told though song you really get a feel for Gavin's tremendous lyrical talent sense of composition and production. There is a touch of Dylan and in some ways Zac Brown blending together to produce Gavin's unique sound. The entire album is an interesting and joyful listen.
When we first heard Gavin competing at the "Seabrook Idol" contest at Red's Kitchen and Tavern in Seabrook NH, we where completely blown away by the the 16 year old. He competed against an incredible line up of contestants and was one of the finalists that wowed the crowd and judges (If I remember right, he was the only contestant to do all originals).
